Who Is Grim?
Grim is one Lord Murder’s “Hero Killers”, a special operative who works outside of the usual machine that is Legion in order to stop suspected heroes before they come to power. In effect, if a candidate is considered a “hazard to the Empire”, Grim has the backing of Lord Murder to personally end the life of the subject. Doting teenagers with a special gift, experienced woodmen who are just too good with a bow, even whole families sharing a powerful secret have all been found at the end of Grim’s blade. He’s big, strong, ruthless and likes it…a lot…sometimes too much.
The Son of a Soldier
Grim grew up the lifestyle of the son of a soldier in the province of Hurley just before Lord Murder’s rebellion. He, his mother and his two sisters would stay on his family’s state-appointed farm as his father transferred from post-to-post, doing what his commanders ordered in order to keep Hurley safe from the other provinces. Grim idolized his father as a young child, and would always dream of one day becoming a soldier in Hurley’s military. He would pretend that the Cold War between the provinces would be over, and he would be called into action fighting side by side with his father defending the borders of his home like a real hero.
Young Grim would train his body to its very limit daily, performing his farming duties with the idea that they would build up his body so he would be strong enough to be a soldier. He would train with hisaxe, scythe and flail, turning everyday chores into military exercises. He would picture himself crushing his enemy’s body parts under the weighted flail, merciliessly chopped through firewood that he pictured as enemy shields with his axe, and slashed through infantry from lines with his scythe. The thought of battle excited little Grim to no end, and worried his mother on more than one occasion that he might not understand the horrors of battle.
But it was quite the opposite. His father would always return from his post for holidays and tell of how his garrison would engage brigands, spies, scouting parties…and the detail in which he was presented them almost made Grim salivate at the thought of being in the army. All Grim could ever think about was joining the army, it was his one all encompassing desire and nothing would stop him from achieving it.
Called into Action Early
At age 17, Grim officially joined the Hurley military and his dream was fulfilled. However, he was stationed with new recruits on the western border, he would have to work his way up to join his father patrolling the south. Every night for six months Grim would dream about being stationed with his father as his lieutenant – father and son routing the enemy and keeping Hurley safe from the other kingdoms.
Grim awoke on the seventh month to a massive alarm, the entire Hurley army was called into action on the South Border. Hurley was preparing for war against an enemy that wasn’t Rasosia…it was someone else…someone who had run over Rasosia and claimed it as their own in a matter of weeks – Legion.
Grim raced to the border to join his army with the rest of the new recruits, he couldn’t wait to find his father and show this new enemy who they were messing with. Hurley was one of the two oldest kingdoms in the known world, with a rich history of combat, war and powerful heroes. He vowed he would become one of those heroes, and by the end of it all this Legion would know his name.
Upon reaching the border, their transport carts came to a sudden halt. The scene was one of unimaginable horror – the great Hurley military was already routed, the majority of its veteran soldiers laying dead in smoldering heaps and in pools of their own blood. Legion had attacked with powerful magics to weaken Hurley’s ranks before moving in with their Legionnaires…the magic-weak kingdom of Hurley’s military might never stood a chance.
Upon seeing his country's army destroyed by Legion...
Looking Murder in the Eye
What happened right after has been kept a secret for years, known only to those who survived the encounter with Legion – and that number isn’t many. When the new recruits were faced with the daunting task of stopping the oncoming force of Legion that their superiors could not, Grim did something that caught the eye of Lord Murder. Lord Murder saw something in young Grim that made him believe he could be an asset to his empire, and offered him a chance to join Legion to become something even greater than a simple soldier expected to die for his country. Grim accepted the invitation, and quickly became Lord Murder’s favourite new weapon.
The Problem Solver is Born
Lord Murder gave Grim the tools to become something that the Empire needed – a soldier that would keep order among the people at any cost. Lord Murder’s decree was that Grim would become a guardian of his Empire, a lone soldier whose mission was to stop potential rebellion before it would start – a person who would do ANYTHING to stop the creation of a hero.
At first Grim was conflicted with the idea, but quickly began to love it when he found how celebrated his position was amongst the rest of Legion. The concept was simple – remove the sickness that would be a hero before it had a chance to grow, and he was the surgeon to do it. As Legion swept across the countryside and claimed practically all of the known world as its own, Grim would be sent to more and more places with orders to hunt and stop the budding threat by any means necessary.
As his actions continued, Grim’s infamy would grow and he relished every moment of it. He was now the true force of Law and Order in the Empire, and could do anything he wanted in its borders. He realized his kingdom and father’s one big mistake – they allowed a dangerous cancer to grow and overwhelm them instead of destroying its source before it grew. Gone was the idealistic child – replaced by the unfeeling bully and killer that the Empire knows today.
The people know that wherever Grim goes, bodies are sure to mount.
Enjoying his new job a little too much...
Current Affairs
While Grim is still seen as a special soldier, his worth has lessened ever since Storm’s defection to the Empire. He’s now more of a forgotten toy that is still used on occassion, but not to the extent of Lord Murder’s newly prized Swordbreaker gem. Grim’s jealousy of Storm is great and is constantly trying to challenge the Swordbreaker to 1-on-1 duels to prove his strength, which is usually met with a sarcastic line from Storm and is ultimately ignored. Whether it be through Storm, Murder’s Lieutenants, or even the Dark Lord himself, Grim vows to return to his status as the greatest warrior in the Empire by any means necessary.
